Maryam the Genius

Post prompted by: Simpsons S1E2 "Bart the Genius"

Hi Maryam.

We don't know yet what kind of education we wanna give you. Mama and I have talked about it, but I thought it was a bit early to really decide. We've thought about various school types (public, private, Islamic, etc) but we'll figure that out for certain in 2-3 years.

I myself have a convoluted history of schools. Your grandparents moved around A LOT, and they lugged all 5 of us around. As a result, I've been to a total of 11 schools throughout my primary & secondary education years.

Here they are:

  1. Bacon Garth school in Hull, England (5-6 years old)
  2. SRI Al-Irsyad in Kuantan (7 years old for ~6 months)
  3. SRI Al-Hidayah in Johor Bahru (7-9 years old)
  4. SRI Al-Irsyad again for 3 months (9 years old)
  5. Sekolah Kebangsaan Bukit Sekilau in Kuantan (9-11 years old)
  6. Sekolah Kebangsaan Hamzah (1) in Machang for 4 months (12 years old)
  7. Hayes Manor School (12-13 years old)
  8. Sekolah Menengah Islam Aman in Kota Bharu for 2 weeks
  9. SMK Hamzah 1 (13-15 years old)
  10. SMK Indera Mahkota 2 (for like 3 days or something)
  11. Sekolah Menengah Sains Kuala Terengganu (16-17 years old)

I thought changing schools this many times would mean I'd have very few long time friends in my adult life, but it turns out that's true for every single person even if they were in the same school for 5-6 years. So I am now thankful for all the experiences and different faces I've met.

My philosophy when it comes to 21st century education is that you need to learn how to learn. With so many open coursewares and open access materials, I'll make sure you know how to get what you need regardless of what institution we put you in.

Random tidbit: Mama is pressured to get you to learn how to read as soon as possible. I used my veto power to say no, because you are 3 years old! Even if you learned how to read tomorrow, you're not going to cure cancer next week. I'm gonna let you be a kid for as long as you need to be...because you won't be one forever.

3 year old you needs my attention now. See you later.
