Like I said in a previous post, in 2021 I started setting small goals for myself on a monthly basis. Some are about personal development, some are about learning new skills, some are just stuff I wanted to do. So here's a look back at January.
1. Write 1 Blog Post
This was simple enough. I set this goal just to make sure the writing spark in me doesn't die.
Goal: Achieved.
2. Learn how to use the Windows command line
I had something specific in mind (ripping images from Instagram), so I found this Python script on Github that let me do so. Problem was, I didn't understand how to use it. So I had to learn some cmd basics in order to do so. There are plenty of websites that teach this (and more advanced topics like programming and making games) for free now so this was a small challenge.
Goal: Achieved.
3. Spend 1 hour on Kaggle
I purposely made this goal easy for me.
I got crazy about AI in late 2020 after watching Alphago the Documentary on Youtube and reading about AlphaFold. Not wanting to miss out on all the AI action, I read books (I finished the book Rebooting AI by Gary Marcus this month), joined multiple AI related subreddits, subscribed to various AI Youtube channels and listened to hours of AI podcasts. I'm actually confident I could give a beginners lecture on AI for laypersons
Kaggle is a free website for learning about machine learning. Spending one hour on it learning about Python basics was easy enough. What I need to do to move on is a different beast altogether.
Goal: Achieved.
4. Finish Fairy Tail
I read Fairy Tail when it first came out but stopped after a few hundred chapters. I can't remember if it was too much of a chore or because of medical school. I set this goal just to say that I finished the series...and I failed. It was too simple a story (especially compared to the masterpiece that is One Piece) that I couldn't justify spending so much time on it.
Goal: Failed, but I don't care.
There were a few other smaller personal goals I achieved, but they aren't interesting enough to write about.
A few other things about January:
- I was in charge of COVID-19 referrals - which was TIRING! I'm a lot more used to the system and what to do now so it's less exhausting. It does remain mentally taxing though.
- Read Foundation by Isaac Asimov. This was another "AI related thing". I finally made the plunge and read the book because Demis Hassabis mentioned it as one of the books that inspired him to start Deepmind
So far, I have these goals for February
- Memorize a deck of cards
- Finish reading 1 fiction book & 2 non-fiction books
- Finish reading Gantz
- Learn 100 new Japanese words on the Drops app
